Ann Arbor ReSkilling Festival
July 15, 2012
10am-5pm
This day-long ReSkilling Festival—which was planned with input from committee members Rebecca Strong, a Program in the Environment graduate, and Laura Smith, a Graham Doctoral Fellow—will focus on hands-on skills, which may include sessions such as bread-making, low-emission wood burning, container gardening, creating a root cellar, natural dyeing and spinning, and raising chickens!
Part of the Transition Towns movement, the concept of reskilling is about preparing for our low-energy future by acquiring new skills related to what we eat, wear, use, and live in. As Transition Towns founder Rob Hopkins points out, “We no longer have many of the basic skills our grandparents took for granted.”Reskilling means providing for ourselves and our communities by growing, preserving, creating, building, and teaching.”
The last Ann Arbor Reskilling Festival, held in February, was a rousing success, with nearly 200 participants choosing from over 30 different sessions on such topics as indoor and outdoor composting, canning, creating string from bark, green burials, human-powered machines, olla irrigation, making applesauce, origami, mending clothes, winter bike commuting, and singing rounds!
Admission is free. Materials fees apply for some sessions.
Location: Ann Arbor, MI, USA
