2012 Western Energy Policy Research Conference

Nobel Prize winning scientist Daniel M. Kammen will be the Keynote Speaker at the conference luncheon. Kammen is the Class of 1935 Distinguished Professor of Energy at the University of California, Berkeley, where he holds appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the department of Nuclear Engineering. Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) and the co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment. He recently returned to the university after serving as the World Bank's Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. He received his undergraduate (Cornell A., B. '84) and graduate (Harvard M. A. '86, Ph.D. '88) training is in physics. Daniel Kammen is a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.  He hosted the Discovery Channel series 'Ecopolis, and has appeared on NOVA, and '60 Minutes' twice.

Growing Our Woodlands in Wales

This conference will engage with the Welsh Government’s policy to significantly increase the woodland cover in Wales from the present 14 per cent to 20 per cent by 2030. The aim is to contribute to the Government’s target of an annual year-on-year 3 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, increasing Wales’ woodland by an average of 5,000 hectares a year over 20 years presents a major challenge.

Ann Arbor ReSkilling Festival

This day-long ReSkilling Festival—which was planned with input from committee members Rebecca Strong, a Program in the Environment graduate, and Laura Smith, a Graham Doctoral Fellow—will focus on hands-on skills, which may include sessions such as bread-making, low-emission wood burning, container gardening, creating a root cellar, natural dyeing and spinning, and raising chickens!
Part of the Transition Towns movement, the concept of reskilling is about preparing for our low-energy future by acquiring new skills related to what we eat, wear, use, and live in. As Transition Towns founder Rob Hopkins points out, “We no longer have many of the basic skills our grandparents took for granted.”Reskilling means providing for ourselves and our communities by growing, preserving, creating, building, and teaching.”
 The last Ann Arbor Reskilling Festival, held in February, was a rousing success, with nearly 200 participants choosing from over 30 different sessions on such topics as indoor and outdoor composting, canning, creating string from bark, green burials, human-powered machines, olla irrigation, making applesauce, origami, mending clothes, winter bike commuting, and singing rounds!
Admission is free. Materials fees apply for some sessions.
